Moolre Escrow: A Mobile Money Trust Layer Moolre Escrow is an escrow service built on top of Moolre's Collections, Disbursements, and USSD APIs, designed to enable secure transactions between parties with little or no existing trust. The Problem Mobile Money has made sending money fast and convenient across our region. However, the ease of transferring funds has also increased the risk of fraud, particularly in online marketplaces where buyers and sellers are often strangers. Buyers frequently hesitate to pay upfront because there is no guarantee that the seller will deliver the promised goods or services. Our Solution Moolre Escrow acts as a trusted third-party intermediary that securely holds funds until both parties are satisfied that the agreed transaction has been completed. The platform serves as a trust broker, reducing the risk for both buyers and sellers while remaining simple and accessible through USSD. How It Works Buyer creates an escrow using our USSD application. The buyer funds the escrow through Mobile Money using Moolre's Collections API. Once the escrow is funded, both the buyer and seller receive SMS notifications confirming the escrow and the amount held. The seller can verify the existence and value of the escrow directly through USSD, providing assurance that payment has been secured. After the goods or services have been delivered and the buyer is satisfied, the buyer authorizes the release of funds. Moolre's Disbursements API transfers the funds from escrow to the seller. Why USSD? Many users across Africa still rely on feature phones or have limited internet connectivity. By leveraging USSD, our platform is accessible to virtually any Mobile Money user without requiring a smartphone or mobile application. Primary User Need Imagine a buyer finds a product on an online marketplace and wants to purchase it from an unfamiliar seller. Instead of sending Mobile Money directly and hoping the seller delivers, the buyer deposits the funds into a secure escrow account. The seller can immediately verify the escrow using our USSD shortcode and confirm that the agreed payment has been secured. Once the buyer receives the product and confirms that it meets expectations, they authorize the release of funds to the seller.
